There is no better way to understand the complexity and nuances of "terroir" than to visit Burgundy, one of France's most prestigious wine regions. As you explore the world-famous Côte d'Or ("Golden Slopes"), home to illustrious Grand Cru's like Romanée Conti, Chambertin and Montrachet, you'll discover the subtle play between land, sun and vine that brings out the most noble and diverse expressions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Burgundy is also one of the most beautiful and historically important regions in France, and you'll experience its rich cultural heritage at fascinating sights like the Clos de Vougeot with its 13th century wine presses, and the Hôtel Dieu (Hospices de Beaune), the Renaissance hospital famous for its yearly wine auction. You'll enjoy exclusive VIP tastings at the region's best estates, including top Premier and Grand Crus in the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits (below right, guests taste with renowned Montrachet winemaker Marc Colin). Enjoy free time for shopping and sightseeing in the charming town of Beaune, indulge in luxury accommodations at historic hotels or chateaux, and enjoy sumptuous dining at some of France's best Michelin-starred restaurants.
Arrival at Dijon train station by noon, where you’ll be greeted by your English-speaking, wine expert guide/driver (if you are already in the region, you can begin your tour first thing in the morning).
Depart for the historic Clos de Vougeot, where winemaking first began in this region, and enjoy a guided tour of the beautiful 13th century monastery.
Your first tasting will be at Chateau de la Tour in Grand Cru appellation Clos Vougeot, the vineyard that surrounds the monastery.
Enjoy a lovely welcome lunch at the charming country inn, Castel de Très Girard.
This afternoon, you’ll enjoy your choice of one or two tastings at great estates of the Côte de Nuits, in appellations such as Gevrey Chambertin or Vosne Romanée, followed by a walk through the renowned vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée Conti.
Check in late afternoon to your luxury 4-star hotel, conveniently located in the historic city of Beaune (or choose a 4-star chateau-hotel in the countryside).
Take the evening to enjoy the charming town of Beaune and discover its great restaurants, with our suggestions.
Enjoy a free morning in the charming city of Beaune. Tour the fascinating Hospices de Beaune, with its beautiful 15th century architecture; check out the Athenaeum, France’s best wine accessory and gift shop; on Saturday mornings, walk through the colorful open-air market; or just wander the streets and enjoy Beaune’s many shops and galleries. (NOTE: you may choose to visit a wine estate this morning instead of free time.)
Lunch on your own in town.
Meet your guide and tour one of the great négociant (wine merchant) houses of Burgundy, like Louis Jadot, Bouchard Père et Fils (in the magnificent, totally private, 15th century Chateau de Beaune), or Drouhin. A tasting of some of their great wines will complete your visit.
You have several options for additional activities this day: visit another great négociant house with tasting; enjoy a tour and tasting at another fine estate of the Côte de Nuits or the Côte de Beaune; visit a producer of another delicious local product, Crème de Cassis liquor; take a guided walk through the vineyards; or visit one of the charming villages of the Hautes Côtes.
