Safari; Sightseeing; Camping; Chobe National Park; Khwai River; Moremi National Park; Savuti Marsh;
Imagine gliding through the Okavango in a dug-out canoe surrounded by the sound of fish, eagles, and hippos snorting in the distance; or driving through the Chobe and having close-up encounters with hundreds of playful elephants as they move to the river to quench their thirst and frolic in the water; or listening to the nocturnal call of a lion while dining under the brilliant stars. Is this your kind of safari? On our “Authentic Mobile Safaris’ we offer a style of travel which is extremely comfortable, yet allows our guests to get off the beaten track and away from the ‘main routes’. The movement of game will determine our choice of campsite for each safari. Inside your roomy safari vehicle you will find a selection of reference books on Botswana’s parks, its history, flora and fauna, as well as a fridge with cold drinks. The vehicles are open to allow the feel of Africa to permeate and are ideal for game-viewing and photography. The support crew will take all your luggage in a separate vehicle, allowing you more room inside your safari vehicle. Your guide and his assistants are experienced professionals who will prioritize your comfort and safety, as well as ensuring optimal game-viewing opportunities throughout your safari. Meals usually consist of a pre-dawn continental breakfast, three-course brunch, light lunch or high tea and a three-course dinner. We supply cold bottled water and soft drinks during game drives (on the vehicle) and beer and wine for dinner. Should you require any additional drinks, your guide will show you where to purchase alcoholic beverages prior to departure or at convenient points along the way. “Authentic mobile safaris” is a relaxed alternative to a lodge safari and designed for those who prefer to sleep under canvas and get away from the crowds.
We meet you in Maun on arrival and transfer by road to our private campsite in Moremi (approx. 3 hour drive), where we will spend the first two nights of our African encounter. Camp will be set up in advance – the showers will be hot, the drinks will be cold, the fires crackling, the table will be laid, the beds turned back and dinner bubbling on the campfire. F/B.
This part of Moremi is drier and affords a better chance of seeing more plains game.
Elephant, impala, tsessebe, wildebeest, zebra, kudu, warthog, squirrels, baboon, vervet monkeys and banded mongoose are common. One can also hope to see buffalo, giraffe, bushbuck, lion, wild dog, leopard, cheetah, black-backed and side-striped jackal, bush babies, fruit bats, sable, roan, steenbok, duiker, honey badger. The birdlife includes water birds as well as dry land birds. Activities: Game drives, birding.
While the staff pack up camp we will do a game drive in a northeasterly direction to our next private campsite (approx. 3 hour drive with a picnic lunch en route). We will spend the next three nights here. On day three we explore the waterways by boat and mokoro from Mboma Island. F/B.
Moremi being an extension of the Okavango, offers a typical wetland system with grassy plains and pans surrounded by well-developed mopane forests and riverine woodland. While out on the mokoros the terrain will alter to typical Okavango Delta terrain with its grassy flood plains dotted with large termite mounds, small islands fringed with palms and larger islands with riparian forests of sausage and ebony trees. Water lilies adorn the bracken-lined watercourses and streams.
Elephant, lechwe, waterbuck, impala, hippo, warthog, squirrels, baboon, vervet monkeys and banded mongoose are common. So are crocodiles and leguan. One can also hope to see buffalo, giraffe, bushbuck, lion, wild dog, leopard, cheetah, black-backed and side-striped jackal, zebra, wildebeest, tsessebe, bush babies, fruit bats, sable, kudu, roan, steenbok, duiiker, honey badger. The birdlife includes water birds as well as dry land birds. Activities: Game drives; birding; mokoro ride.
While the camp staff break camp and load the supply vehicle, we head off on a game drive. When we meet up with the supply vehicle again we drive to Savuti via the Khwai River, which offers good opportunities for close-up game and raptor photography. The drive lasts approx five hours with a picnic lunch en route. At Savuti the staff will set up camp on the banks of the now dry Savuti Channel while we explore our new environment. F/B.
Savuti Marsh is typical open grassland surrounded by Acacia bush and stony outcrops reminiscent of Serengeti.
Savuti is famous for its lions and hyenas, lone elephant bulls, zebra and wildebeest migrations. Other game one can hope to see include: giraffe, tsessebe, warthog, black-backed jackal, leopard, cheetah, bat-eared fox, impala, wild dog, kudu, baboon, steenbok, dwarf, slender and banded mongoose. Activities: Game drives; birding, bushman paintings, elephants at waterhole.
The drive to the Chobe River takes about four hours. We stay in a private campsite overlooking the Chobe river in the Chobe National Park. F/B.
Along the Chobe riverfront the terrain is that of a typical riverine ecosystem. Away from the river we have mixed miombo and broadleaved woodland that harbours rich avifauna.
Northern Chobe is famous for its elephant & buffalo herds, puku, kudu, Chobe bushbuck and hippo. One could also hope to see: lion, leopard, wild dog, giraffe, waterbuck, zebra, impala, baboon, vervet monkeys, warthog, sable, roan, lechwe, banded mongoose, crocodile, leguan.
