An Exciting Interview with Arthur Frommer

South Africa Beach Holiday

Print Email

Detailed Trip Description

South Africa has so many fantastic beaches that you could have a great holiday at any one of them and, obviously, the most relaxing way to enjoy a beach holiday is to pick a spot and stay there. Your best bets would be either Cape Town, Kleinmond, Plettenberg Bay, Port Elizabeth, Port Alfred, Cintsa, Morgans Bay, Coffee Bay, Margate (if you dont mind miles of development), Durban (ditto), Ballito Bay, or St Lucia. But if you want a whole range of beach experiences and don?t mind moving about ? try this. You?ll also see some great non-beach scenery, and get the chance to do all kinds of other things as well. This tour starts in the Cape where the water is not all that warm but the beaches are beautiful, and ends in KwaZulu-Natal, which is virtually a beach playground with warm water, long sandy beaches and every amenity you could wish for. This is a self drive, but can be modified to a private tour.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 - Cape Town

Commercial Flight

Fly in to Cape Town and, after settling in to your hotel, pop down to Clifton , where the beautiful people hang out.

Beach

Watch the sun set over the sea. Make sure you have lots of sunscreen and, if you've forgotten to bring some, pop in to a chemist on the way and buy a bottle or two.

Day 2 - Cape Town

Beach

Get up really early and drive to Kalk Bay for breakfast, and then on to Boulders Beach in the Cape Peninsula National Park. Boulders is probably the best swimming beach in the country, and there are penguins.

Sightseeing

Find a good spot, either Boulders, Fish Hoek or Kalk Bay to watch the sunset over False Bay. Note watch the sunset, not watch the sun set because, of course youre looking East. But watch the sunset, you?ll be surprised.

Day 3 - Cape Town

Private Car Service

Drive to Langebaan.

Food and Dining

Lunch at Strandloper, and return to Cape Town.

Day 4 - Plettenberg Bay

Private Car Service

Leave really early and drive through Betty's Bay or Hermanus for breakfast overlooking the sea.

Food and Dining

Continue on to Knysna, where you can have lunch overlooking the lagoon in any one of a number of great restaurants ? or pig out on oysters.

Beach

Continue to Plettenberg Bay, where you can spend the afternoon on the beach, and enjoy sundowners and/or supper in one of a number of excellent establishments. Youre spoiled for choice. Either hang out at Robberg Beach or Keurbooms if you want space and not too many people, or Central or Lookout Beach if you like the vibe of lots of people.

Day 5 - Port Elizabeth

Beach

Pack up and drive out to Nature's Valley, where the beach is practically deserted and just goes on for ever. After a few hours there, continue on to Port Elizabeth, which has more beaches than you can imagine, ranging from wall to wall burger bars to long and deserted.

Day 6 - Port Elizabeth

Beach

After an early morning swim and/or a walk on the beach, head off to Coffee Bay on the Wild Coast. Stay for a few days, exploring and going for long walks.

Day 7 - Durban

Beach

This should really be day 10 or whatever, as you will have wanted to spend more than a day at at least one of the preceeding destinations.

Private Car Service

Drive to almost anywhere on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, from Port Edward to north of Durban, the whole coast is virtually one strung out beach resort. You will be spoiled for choices, and the water is warm.

Day 8 - Durban

Beach

Once you've found your perfect sub-tropical beach spot, don't move. The bad news is you have missed out hundreds of beautiful beaches, but you'd need a year to see even half of all we have to offer
