Detailed Trip Description
This route is most enjoyable if combined with another self-drive itinerary. It takes you through Swaziland and Zululand to Durban. Read descriptions of our other Round Trips for ideas of the many things to do in the area. One traditional route is through Swaziland, the small independent kingdom surrounded by South Africa, but other highlights of this journey are the national parks and cultural villages in Zululand. A most rewarding area to see is the St. Lucia lakes near Hluhluwe.
Trip Itinerary
Day 1 - Mbabane
Car Rental
Drive from Johannesburg for 400 km, or from the Kruger Park, 200-300km - through Swaziland.
Shopping
Stop at some of the small markets along the road and start a collection of souvenirs in the city of Mbabane.
Hotel
Stay overnight in Swaziland.
Day 2-3 - Hluhluwe
Car Rental
Drive from Swaziland to Hluhluwe.
National Parks
On the way, you may want to visit one of the two national parks, either Itala or Mkuzi.
Adventure
Other activities of interest are the African traditional dancing shows in the village of Dumazulu, and sailing trips on the St. Lucia Lake where you can see hippo and crocodiles.
Hotel
Spend two nights in the St. Lucia area.
Day 4 - Durban
Car Rental
Drive from Hluhluwe to Durban.
Hotel
Sleep in Umhlanga Rocks, a seaside town situated just outside of Durban.
Day 5 - Durban
Airport Transfer
Your journey ends in Durban and you can continue via the Drakensberg to Johannesburg or fly to Port Elizabeth to begin the Garden Route Self Drive.
