An exciting day of sightseeing includes the Champs Elysées, Arc de Triomphe, Place de la Concorde, views of Notre Dame Cathedral and an ascent to the second level of the Eiffel Tower.
Then drive to Montmartre and take the funicular to the Place du Tertre with its many artists.
Enjoy a walking tour here, in the shadow of the Sacre Coeur Basilica.
Afterwards, travel to Rouen, where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431. Then on to the historic town of Bayeux for the night. (B,D)
Your first stop this morning is at the Tapestry Museum to see Queen Matilda's 900-year-old tapestry depicting the Battle of Hastings of 1066.
Then travel on to visit the D-Day Landing Beaches and the somber Omaha Military cemetery.
Journey on to Mont St. Michel to visit the famous Benedictine Abbey, perched on a rocky islet in the Gulf of Saint Malo. (B,D)
This morning travel to Angers, dominated by its 13th century château. Continue through the Loire Valley, renowned for its châteaux and vineyards. Sample a recent vintage on a visit to a wine cellar in Saumur.
Finally head to Amboise for the next two nights. (B)
Stay at Novotel (F) in Amboise.
Along with a local guide visit Chenonceau, Catherine de Medici's 16th-century fairy tale château. Next view Chambord, the jewel of the French Renaissance and the largest château in the region. Return to Amboise and visit the Castle of Amboise, where Leonardo da Vinci is buried.
Then return to the hotel, with the rest of the day at leisure. (B,D)
First stop this morning is at Chartres to visit the magnificent Cathedral, a fine example of gothic architecture. Then visit the Palace of Fontainebleau. Admire this former royal residence before returning to Paris, where your evening is free. (B)
Stay at Renaissance La Defense (SF) in Paris.
Enjoy a full day at leisure for independent activities. Perhaps visit the Louvre, explore the Left Bank or take a River Seine cruise.
