Detailed Trip Description

Board a local river launch for a comfortably-paced, guided 2-day trip down the Mekong with frequent stops for villages, nature, temples or whatever you fancy. Explore the sites of scenic Luang Prabang then fly on to Vientiane. Your guide speaks fluent English and knows the local people you will meet. There are opportunities for casual exploration of temples, markets and villages.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 - Laos

 
Huay Xay / Pakbeng.
Bus

Arriving from Thailand by road in mid morning, cross the Mekong River with other travelers to meet your guides at Huay Xay, Laos’s immigration. (We can help you visit areas of northern Thailand or arrange for your transport to Huay Xay from Bangkok. It may be necessary to overnight in northern Thailand prior to transporting to Huay Xay.)

Sailing

Travel with your guide down the Mekong for about four hours by local boat to your overnight guesthouse in Pakbeng. Pakbeng is an active, ragged river village with many shops, restaurants, boats and trucks.

Hotel

The guesthouse is primitive, but livable, with a great view of the Mekong, outside facilities and electricity part of the time. Meals: Lunch.


Day 2 - Laos

 
Tribal Villages.
Sightseeing

After breakfast, you will be picked up and driven to the villages of Ban Lao Sung and Ban Done Keo. Your trip takes you through a scenic gorge and sparsely populated mountain country. The villages are very friendly in this area, and we will help establish a relationship that will enable you to see how communities are organized, view their homes and observe and discuss some of their traditions.

Food and Dining

You will sample some local foods and gain a good feeling for the simple life of rural Laos.

Hotel

Return to your hotel in Pakbeng for your overnight. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.


Day 3 - Luang Prabang

 
Boat to Luang Prabang.
Sailing

After breakfast, continue by a long, chartered powered riverboat to Luang Prabang with a picnic lunch along the way. The boat offers a broad deck for panoramic viewing and a sheltered area in case of sun or rain.

Sightseeing

The day will be busy with visits to the villages of Ban Hat Kham, Ban Hat Mad and Ban Sang Hay Village known for jars and a special local fermented and distilled beverage.

You will also visit Tham Ting Cave and Pak Ou Cave.

You may decide to stop to observe and photograph fishermen, elephants hauling logs from the forest, gold panning, riverbank agriculture or rich natural forests. Dock at a temple in Luang Prabang and walk to your hotel. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.


Day 4 - Luang Prabang

 
Sightseeing

After breakfast, take a city tour where you will be able to visit the temples, then on to the weaving village of Ban Phanom. You will enjoy the pace and uncrowded space of Luang Prabang, which is the favorite Asian city of many people.

Sightseeing

Most sites are within walking distance and the climate is moderate. Take time just to stroll the city on your own. Meals: Breakfast.


Day 5 - Luang Prabang

 
Luang Prabang / Vientiane.
Commercial Flight

Fly to Vientiane in the morning.

Sightseeing

Spend the rest of the day touring the sites of Vientiane that are of greatest interest. There are some quite amazing temples, a museum, the Buddha Park and the riverfront to choose from.

Hotel

Overnight in a quiet, comfortable hotel near the Mekong. Meals: Breakfast.


Day 6 - Vientiane

 
Vientiane / Onward.
Sightseeing

You will have time for a visit to the temples and souvenir shops after breakfast.

Airport Transfer

Transfer to Airport as your plane leaves for Bangkok or other onward destinations. Meals: Breakfast.
