Since 1989, we have delighted in helping travelers explore Madagascar. This remote, unique, and exotic island is richer in indigenous flora and fauna than any other country in the world. The natural history of Madagascar is threatened, but you will see the very best remaining natural areas in the company of a superb naturalist guide.
Upon arrival in Antananarivo (‘Tana’ - the City of a Thousand Warriors), you will be met and transferred to the Hotel Relais des Plateaux, or similar.
If time permits, spend the afternoon at the Tana Lemur Park. Meals: Dinner.
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Ft. Dauphin.
Enjoy a two hour scenic drive to Berenty, a unique private nature sanctuary in the extreme southeast of Madagascar. Berenty is located at the end of a vast mountain range near many tropical beaches.
Here you will spend time exploring the Berenty Reserve, looking for lemurs and other wildlife, with an experienced guide.
You will probably see at least three species of lemurs including the popular Ring-Tailed Lemurs, cuddly and comical Sifakas, and Brown Lemurs. This should rank among your best wildlife experiences ever. There are about 56 species of resident birds, including the large Madagascar buzzard. You will also have the opportunity for an evening walk through the reserve in search of some of the nocturnal wildlife.
Overnights at the Berenty Lodge, or similar, for two nights. Meals: 2 Breakfasts, 2 Dinners.
Fly back to Tana.
Drive to Perinet Special Reserve where you will overnight at the Hotel Vakona, or similar, for two nights. Stop at the reptile farm en route.
You will have an opportunity for another night walk. Visit the Special Lemur Reserve and Orchid Park. You will be amazed at the game-finding skills and eyesight of your guides. The local people in the area consider the resident singing Indri, the largest living Lemurs, to be their ancestors. The Indri, along with eight other species of Lemurs, live in the park.
You may also find the island's largest chameleons, as well as many birds and butterflies.
After dark, you will have a night walk in search of the mouse lemur, chameleons, and frogs. Meals: 2 Breakfasts, 2 Dinners.
Another morning visit of Mantadia Naitonal Park and Vakona Reserve before driving back to Tana.
Overnight at the Relais des Plateaux, or similar. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner.
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Nosy Be, a tiny tropical island off the coast of Madagascar.
Endless beaches rim turquoise lagoons, lush jungles and exotic plantations. From your plane, you will see the vast area of Madagascar that has been devastated beyond ecological redemption through clearing, erosion and overgrazing. Seeing how little remains of the natural areas will impress upon you how little time remains to save this amazing place.
Consider an optional late afternoon excursion to Mont Passot, the island's highest point, for a spectacular view of blue lagoons, crater lakes, and lush forest.
Overnight at the Hotel Vanilla, or similar, for two nights. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner.
Today you will explore some of the smaller islands off Nosy Be.
Enjoy a visit to Nosy Komba, a small volcanic island and its resident black Lemurs, before sailing to Nosy Tanikely.
Enjoy an afternoon of swimming and snorkeling at the submarine reserve. This officially protected marine reserve is one of the best remaining sites for snorkeling in the area.
Return to the Hotel Vanilla, or similar, for your overnight. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner.
Spend your final morning in Madagascar exploring Nosy Be or just relaxing at the resort.
Fly back to Tana.
Time permitting, visit the souvenir market for some last minute shopping.
