Since 1989 we have delighted in helping travelers explore Madagascar. This remote, unique, and exotic island is richer in indigenous flora and fauna than any other country in the world. The natural history of Madagascar is threatened, but you will see the very best remaining natural areas in the company of a superb naturalist guide.
Arrive in Antananarivo (Tana-the City of a Thousand Warriors). You will be met upon arrival and transferred to the Hotel Relais des Plateaux (or similar) for your overnight.
If time permits, spend the afternoon at the Tana Lemur Park. Meals: Dinner.
After breakfast, take a tour of Tana and visit the Andafiavaratra Museum.
Drive to Antsirabe with a stop for lunch and places of interest along the way.
Arrive in Antsirabe and transfer to the Hotel des Thermes, or similar, for you dinner and overnight. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
After breakfast, take a tour of Ansirabe and the surrounding area before driving to Ranomafana. This highland area is characterized by its very attractive architecture. The houses are made with ornately carved wooden balconies and shutters with bright colors.
You will also pass the 'col de tapia,' a type of tree which is resistant to bush-fire.
Stop at Ambositra to visit some of the woodcarving shops, and at Ambohimahasoa for lunch and an animated folkloric dance.
Overnight, for two nights, at the Hotel Centrest (or similar). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Enjoy a full morning visit of Ranomafana National Park, home to 12 species of lemurs including the newly discovered Golden Bamboo lemurs. The park also has interesting populations of birds, frogs, chameleons, and orchids.
Return to the hotel for lunch.
In the afternoon, take a swim in the thermal swimming pool and visit the park museum.
In the evening, take a night walk through the forest in search of the mouse lemur, eastern avahi, and the striped civet cat.
Return to the Hotel Centrest (or similar) for your overnight. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
After breakfast, continue your drive southward toward Isalo.
Stop in Fianarantsoa for a little shopping and a picnic lunch. They also have a bank and post office, if needed.
Next you will make a stop in Ambalavao to visit the Antemoro Paper Factory. By sunset, you will arrive at the village of Ranohira.
Dinner and overnight at the Hotel Relais de la Reine (or similar). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Spend the morning in Isalo National Park.
Trek to Namazaha to see the canyons, Piscine Noire, Piscine Bleue, and Cascade. Continue your walk to la Piscine Naturelle (natural swimming pool), for a picnic in the park. Note: We recommend good walking-boots for this hike.
Return to the village and visit the Interpretation Center, where you learn more about the Massif of Isalo: its geology, history, flora and fauna. End the day by driving to ‘Fenêtre de l’Isalo’ for a beautiful sunset.
Return to the Hotel Relais de la Reine (or similar). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Today’s drive will bring you new scenery, as you travel among the dry and spiny forests of the south.
Enjoy lunch at the Hotel Victory, before a tour of the botanical gardens, with hundreds of endemic plants of Madagascar.
Take a tour of Tuléar and the sea shell market.
Return to the Hotel Victory (or similar) for your dinner and overnight. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Fly from Tuléar to Ft. Dauphin.
From here, you will depart overland on a two hour scenic drive to Berenty, a unique private nature sanctuary in the extreme southeast of Madagascar. Berenty is located at the end of a vast mountain range near many tropical beaches.
Here, you will spend time exploring the Berenty Reserve, looking for lemurs and other wildlife with an experienced guide.
You will also have the opportunity for an evening walk through the reserve in search of some of the nocturnal wildlife.
Overnight, for two nights, at the Berenty Lodge (or similar). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Spend another full day at the Berenty Reserve. You will probably see at least three species of lemurs, including the popular ring-tailed lemurs, cuddly and comical sifakas, and brown lemurs. This should rank among your best wildlife experiences ever. There are about 56 species of resident birds, including the large Madagascar buzzard.
You may also visit the local museum. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Return to Ft. Dauphin and fly back to Tana.
On arrival, drive to Perinet Special Reserve, where you will overnight at the Feon'ny Ala Hotel, or similar, for two nights.
Enjoy another night walk. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Visit the Special Lemur Reserve and Orchid Park. You will be amazed at the game-finding skills and eyesight of your guides. The local people in the area consider the resident singing Indri, the largest living lemurs, to be their ancestors. The Indri, along with eight other species of lemurs, live in the park. You may also find the island's largest chameleons, as well as many birds and butterflies.
Return to the Feon’ny Ala Hotel, or similar, for your dinner and overnight. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Enjoy another morning walk in the forest of Mantadia National Park and Vakona Reserve.
Have lunch before driving back to Tana.
Transfer to the Hotel Relais des Plateaux, or similar, for your overnight. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
Visit the handicraft market for some last-minute souvenirs.
Transfer to the airport for your flight home, Meals: Breakfast.
