The Shira Plateau is one of the most fascinating and scenic areas on Kilimanjaro. It is well worth a visit just to explore the ridges and moorland. However, the road to Shira is only accessible by 4-wheel-drive vehicles and can become impassable during wet periods. This is More Technical and Challenging Route.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 - Tanzania

 
Londorossi Gate {2200m} - Simba River {2500m} - Simba Campsite {2500m}.
Private Car Services

Arrive in a 4 Wheel Drive Vehicle to the Londorossi Gate.

Hiking

Introduction to your Guide/Porters and after registration drive further in your vehicle for another approx. 2 hrs drive {approx 50kms} to Simba River where you commence your climb on foot {trekking /hiking} for approximate 3 to 4 hrs, with picnic lunch enroute through giant Savannah and vegetations.

Camping

Arrive at the Simba Campsite for your dinner and overnight.


Day 2 - On Foot

 
Simba Campsite {2500m} - Shira Plateau {3600m}.
Hiking

After breakfast, start climbing through giant Savannah with Flora and Fauna with picnic lunch for approximately 3 to 4 hrs up to the Shira Plateau for dinner and overnight.


Day 3 - On Foot

 
Shira Plateau Campsite {3600m}.
Hiking

After breakfast, day is spent for an excursion walk around the vast Shira Plateau for an acclimatization walk. A chance to see the beautiful landscape of Kilimanjaro with its Fauna, Flora and good vegetation.

Camping

Picnic lunchboxes are taken enroute returning late afternoon back to the Shira Plateau Campsite for dinner and overnight.


Day 4 - On Foot

 
Shira Plateau {3600m} - Lava Tower {4600m}.
Hiking

After breakfast, start climb through the glaciers and moorland for approximately 4 to 5hrs, with picnic lunch enroute.

Camping

Arrive at the Lava Tower for dinner and overnight at Lava Tower {An evening short trekking can be interesting}.


Day 5 - On Foot

 
Lava Tower {4600m} - Arrow Glacier Hut {4900m} or Barafu Hut {4600m}.
Hiking

EITHER {i} After breakfast, with picnic walk descending towards the Barafu Hut, which is reached in 4 to 5hours. This are easier accessable route towards the Crater Rim.

Or {II}
Hiking

A Climb ascending to the Northern Icefield towards the Arrow Glacier Hut which is reached by climbing steeply for approximate 4 to 5 hours for dinner and overnight - till just after midnight - when you are woken up. either at Barafu Hut / Or Arrow Glacier Hut.


Day 6 - On Foot

 
Barafu Hut {4600m}-Stella Point {5600m}UHURU PEAK - CRATER RIM {5895m}.
Hiking

Very early around 0100 hours, light breakfast and start climb to the summit (alt.5895m), short rest.

Camping

Descend to Barafu hut for lunch enroute to Mweka Hut (alt.3000m).


Day 7 - Arusha, Tanzania

 
Private Car Services

Final descent to the Mweka gate and transfers to Arusha.
