Detailed Trip Description

From Rome's monumental Colosseum to Florence's art masterpieces to Tuscany's medieval hill towns, this week in Italy packs in the classic highlights. Art historians and local guides provide the inside story behind Florence's art masterpieces, notably at the Uffizi Gallery. Take a high-speed train to Rome to view the Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, and ornate fountains at the center of piazzas. Gaze at the Sistine Chapel on a tour of the Vatican. This Tuscany tour explores preserved ancient hill towns like Siena, Orvieto, and Todi. Crowning Assisi is a basilica named after native St. Francis, who lies buried there.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 - Rome, Italy

 
Arrive in Rome.
Private Car Services

Tour departs: 9:30 AM from Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Fiumicino. Travel from Rome through Lazio and Umbria to the town of Orvieto; have lunch at a trattoria, and see one of Italy’s greatest cathedrals.

Hotels

The next two nights are spent in the medieval hill town of Todi, where you’ll stay at the only hotel in the center of town. Experience the real Italy, where everything revolves around the piazza and life unfolds at a lovely pace.


Day 2 - Umbria, Italy

 
Assisi / Umbria / Todi.
Sightseeing

Visit Basilica di San Francesco in medieval Assisi; a local expert shares insights about its 13th- and 14th-century frescoes on a guided tour. Attend a wine tasting at the osteria of a famed winery before you return to Todi to explore the pleasures of small-town Italian life. Meals B


Day 3 - Florence, Italy

 
Siena / Tuscany / Florence.
Sightseeing

See the picturesque landscapes of Tuscany en route to Siena, where you’ll tour the ornately decorated Duomo and see the Piazza del Campo – twice a year, the running of the Palio occurs here. Continue on to Florence for a two-night stay.

Join us for a visit to the renowned Galleria dell’Accademia, home of Michelangelo’s David, and enjoy a lecture this evening by a local art historian. Meals BD


Day 4 - Rome, Italy

 
Renaissance Treasures of Florence.
Sightseeing

A guided walking tour of landmark sites in Florence precedes a tour of the Uffizi Gallery with a local expert; see some of the world’s greatest art masterpieces.

Relaxation

The rest of the day is free to explore on your own. Meals B


Day 5 - Florence, Italy

 
Eurostar to Rome.
Trains

Travel first class by high-speed Eurostar train to Rome.

Sightseeing

A walking tour of Old Rome, with a local guide, shows you sites such as Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola and the Pantheon. Topped off by a gelato (Italian ice cream), it’s a perfect day!

Day 6 - Vatican City, Italy

 
Guided Tour of the Vatican.
Museums

Tauck Exclusive – a private after-hours tour of the Vatican Museums takes you to the Candelabra Gallery, the Map Gallery and the Tapestries. A highlight is a visit to the Sistine Chapel – without the crowds, you’ll discover that the floor is as famous as the ceiling!

Relaxation

Spend the remainder of the day as you please in Rome. Meals B


Day 7 - Rome, Italy

 
Rome as You Please.
Sightseeing

Sightseeing includes the Roman Forum (from above) and visits to the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square; the rest of the day is free.

Join us this evening for a farewell reception and dinner. Meals BD


Day 8 - Rome, Italy

 
Journey Home.
Airport Transfers

Tour ends: 7:30 AM at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Fiumicino. Persons who are departing at other times should secure their own transportation to the airport; allow a minimum of 2 1/2 hours for flight check-in. Meals B
