Detailed Trip Description

An unforgettable nine days of culinary and cultural experiences centered around Yangtze River Cruise. Some highlights include visiting the Temple of Heaven, the Forbidden City, the famed great Great Wall, the Summer Palace and Tian An Men Square in Beijing. You will also travel to Xi'an where you will have many photo-ops while looking at the Terra Cotta Warriors, the Big Wild Pogada, and the Ancient City Wall. Next it's on to Guilin to visit the Li River. In Chongqing, take a relaxing Yangtze River Cruise. Finally in Shanghai, visit the beautiful Yu Garden, the Jade Buddha Temple and walk along the Bund.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 - Beijing

 
Sightseeing in Beijing

Arrive in Beijing and meet with your guide before you are transferred to your hotel. In the afternoon, visit Heaven Temple (Tian Tan in Chinese), which was built in 1420 during the Ming Dynasty and expanded in the Qing Dynasty at present, covering an area of 273 hectares. The grand temple served as the sacrificial place for the emperors of the Ming and Qing to worship the heaven, presenting gratitude for the harvest of this year and praying for another good harvest next year.

Day 2 - Beijing

 
Sightseeing at Tian An Men Square, the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace

Take a stroll at Tian An Men Square. Then go to visit Forbidden City (Gu Gong) the emperor's palace, which was built between 1406 and 1420 with 9000 halls and rooms, containing many precious relics. Facing south and rising from a terrace, the largest palace in the world represents the supreme power and authority as well as a beautiful example of authentic Chinese architecture. In the afternoon we make an excursion to the Summer Palace (Yi He Yuan in Chi).

Day 3 - Beijing

 
Walk Along the Famed Great Wall

In the morning go to the Great Wall at Mutianyu. The Great Wall is one of the eight ancient wonders of the world and the only man-made construction on earth that astronauts can see from the moon. Starting out in the east on the banks of Yalu River in Liaoning Province, the Wall stretches westwards for 12,700 kilometers to Jiayuguan in the Gobi Desert. It was built as a defensive structure and gradually become the symbol of the ancient Chinese civilization. You will have a late afternoon drive back Beijing.

Day 4 - Xian

 
Adventures in Xi'an

In the morning transfer to the airport and fly to Xian by flight (CA1203 0720/0925). Upon arrival, drive to visit the Museum of the Terra-cotta Army. This mighty army of terracotta warriors and horses, found in three vaults 39 km east of Xi’an and 1.5km from the Qin emperor’s mausoleum, is the most popular tourist attraction of Shaanxi province. An inside museum has been built over these pits, covering a floor space of 20,000 square meters and displaying 8,000 life-size terracotta warriors, 100 or so chariots, and 30,000 weapons-an assemblage famed as the Eighth World Wonder and a world cultural heritage site. Afterwards make a trip to the Da Yan Ta (Big Wild-Goose Pagoda), which was completed in 652, or the 3rd year of Yonghui reign of the Tang emperor Gaozong. The 64.1-metre-high Pagoda in Ci’en Temple is a pavilion-like brick structure whose serene and well-proportioned form has become the emblem of Xian.

Day 5 - Xian

 
More sightseeing in Xi'an- visit the Ancient City Wall, the Stele Museum and the ancient City Wall

In the morning we continue our tour in Xi’an. Visit the Grand Mosque, the Old City area, the Stele Museum, and the Xi’an Ancient City Wall. The Stele Museum was built in 1963, and includes a mausoleum stone sculpture and a religious stone sculpture from Western Han Dynasty (206BC-24AD) to Tang Dynasty. It is prized as a great treasure in the art of world stone sculptures. The Xi'an Ancient City Wall is the best preserved, oldest and largest ancient city defense system in China. Later in the afternoon transfer to the airport for a departure fliight to Guilin (CA1225 1825/2010). Transfer to hotel upon arrival in Guilin.

Day 6 - Guilin

 
Sailing on the Lijiang River to Yangshuo. Then departure to Chongqing.

In the morning, go sailing on the Lijiang River to Yangshuo. You will enjoy the picturesque mountains, peaceful green fields, farms and villages with water buffalos, cows wondering around on both sides of the river bank. The Lijiang River is crystal clear, and no matter how deep the water is, the riverbed, the pebbles, sand, and weeds can be seen. Disembark at the one-thousand-year-old town Yangshuo go around the local market, and then drive back to Guilin for a visit to the Elephant Trunk Hill. At night transfer to airport and take flight to Chongqing (CA4386 2255/0005+1). Drive to the pier and embark the Yangtze Cruise ship.

Day 7 - Chongqing

 
Sightseeing in Chongqing- see the People's Auditorium, Eling Park and travel to Ciqikou

Chongqing People's Auditorium is the complex structure consists of an auditorium and three accompanying buildings. Chongqing People's Auditorium is a symmetric building modeled on the famous Tiantan, or the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. It has long been hailed as a masterpiece oriental structure. Jiefangbei, which stands in the most prosperous downtown of Chongqing is not only the symbol of civilization, it is also the Center of the city marked as Chongqing's commercial heart. Eling Park was originally named Edingling (Goose Nape Hill), for its narrow and steep shape resembling a nape of a goose. Ciqikou is an old town preserved in sprawling modern Chongqing and it's an old sleepy town built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Day 8 - Chongqing

 
Cruise down the Yangtze River and stop in Fengdu

The magnificent cruise ship starts its voyage downstream at 22 pm on the Yangtze River the third largest river in the world. Enjoy the great mountains along the big river. Shore excursion to Fengdu Ghost City. -Fengdu is where the devil lives, according to Chinese legend. They say that spirits go to heaven, and evil goes to Fengdu. The town is overlooked by Ming Shan Hill, home of Tianzi, the King of the Dead. The whole place has an eerie feel to it with deserted streets, tower blocks, empty shops and banks. The only people here are those who make a living from visiting cruise boats. After the visit, return the ship.

Day 9 - Chongqing

 
Sightseeing at China's famed Gorges

In the morning pass by Qutang Gorge. Though the shortest covering a distance of 8 kilometers. It is most majestic and dangerous gorge among the Three. The great peaks pierce up the sky, sheer cliffs seem to squeeze your body from both sides, and the narrow "gates" of the waterway are only 50 meters wide in some parts. Afterwards come to Wu Gorge (45 km), well known for its beauty and seclusion. (1) Parking at Badong town at 1330 pm and transferring to the local boat at Shennong Stream to explore the remains of the ancient plank road along the river, the mysterious ancient coffins hanging high on the cliff, and wild monkeys running under the primitive bushes. Head back to the ship at 1630 pm. (2) Go sightseeing at the beautiful Small Three Gorges. Note: (1) and (2) may be replaced each other according to the ship’s present schedule. Later come to Xiling Gorge (the longest, 66 kilometers), famous for its many shoals, turbulent waters and karst carves on both banks. In the late afternoon pass by the Fifth section of the Ship Gate of the Three Gorges Dame.

Day 10 - Chongqing

 
Visit Sandouping to see the Three Gorges Dam. Also visit the Three Gorge Museum. Then fly to Shanghai.

At Sandouping visit the completed Three Gorges Dam at about 0830 am. Then go to The Three Gorge Museum, where you will learn about the construction history, the Dam’s working principle and many interesting facts. On the top of the Panzi Shan, look down the great project below you. Standing nearby the sluice gate, feel the forceful power of the river water. After the two-hour visit, return to the ship and finally stop at Yichang at about 12 am. Now, the cruise tour is over. Meet with your guide and after lunch transfer to the airport for Shanghai by flight MU5460 1520/1650. Arrival Shanghai, transfer to hotel.

Day 11 - Shanghai

 
Enjoy the wonders of Shanghai- Yuyuan Garden, the Bund and more.

In the morning visit Yu Yuan (Yu-Garden). Originally built in 1559, the 38th year of the Jiajing reign of the Qing Dynasty, it served as the private garden of high-ranking official. The word “Yu” means “safe and peaceful," and the two words “Yu Yuan” hints that the garden was built to "please my parents and make them feel safe and peaceful." With an area of two hectares, Yu Yuan is dotted with lofty and steep rocks, green trees, and ancient buildings. It is celebrated for its quietness and elegance. Then visit Waitan (Bund). As one of the most recognizable architectural symbols of Shanghai, the Bund site shows a portion of the historic center of the foreign presence in Shanghai and its transformation in recent times. Afterwards visit the nearby old city area. Free at leisure in the afternoon.
